Bird Programme - O.R. Tambo Airport
4th November 2014At our meeting on Tuesday 4th November, Melissa Hofmann gave us an insightful and interesting presentation about the extensive Bird Programme at O.R. Tambo Airport. Bird strikes are a regular occurrence and can cause major damage to airplanes during take-off and landing. The programme involves “chasing” of birds big and small including guinea fowl, raptors, swallows and herons etc to steer them away from potential bird strike dangers.
It involves long and early hours and constant monitoring of bird activity. Wonderfully trained dogs such Spaniels and Collies are used to chase the birds. Past President Billy Phillips thanked Melissa for the informative presentation.
